UK Online Spending Highest in Europe

It’s been confirmed that the UK is a nation of online shopaholics – we’re now spending more online than any of our European neighbours.

In 2009, here in the UK, consumers spent a massive £38bn online, an average of £1,102 per shopper, according to the Centre for Retail Research (CRR). Online sales now account for 10% of total retail sales in the UK with a prediction that this will continue to grow to £42.7bn in 2010.

Consumer confidence is continuing to grow with many now making purchases in excess of £1,000 in a single online transaction. This growth in consumer confidence opens up opportunities for a greater number of online retailers where products are of a higher value.

With this continued growth likely to continue, particularly as the UK emerges from recession with a keener eye for a bargain, the online retailer has the opportunity to thrive. However, competition can be fierce in many online markets with retailers able to sell large quantities with very small margins.

There’s no time like the present to get your online marketing strategy nailed down and to get your house in order. You need to make sure you’re appearing ahead of the competition, that your products are priced competitively and that you make the purchase as simple and memorable (for the right reasons) for all of your customers.
